Wenn Auge Mund Wird (When Eyes Becomes Mouth) by Veza Fernandez
This work by dancer/choreographer Veza Fernández adopts a feminist perspective in dealing with the emancipatory power of dance. When Eye Becomes Mouth gathers a cast of twelve protagonists of Vienna’s queer dance/performance scene on stage in order to try and create a new, feminist image of the ballerina.
When Eye Becomes Mouth is a DIY type of dance theatre about the role of the dancer, her emancipatory power, the expression of her desires and the necessity of sticking together when hope is fading. The piece attempts to create a new, feminist image of the ballerina, which recharges, encourages and extends the character of the dancer. It is supposed to become a celebration of collective diversity, not only regarding mise-en-scène and choreography, but also through the cast on stage, who are all dancers, performers and artists of Vienna’s queer dance and performance scene examining new, partially utopian possibilities of collective, dance-based and choreographic existence for women, queer people or artists.
